The underrepresentation of women in STEM fields has reached crisis proportions. In 1995, 37% of computer scientists were women. Today, it’s only 24%. Bishop Arts Theatre Center (BATC) holds equity, diversity, and inclusion at the helm of our organizational values, and is committed to developing programs that break down the systemic barriers of racism and sexism within our communities.

The community we serve is largely Black, Latinx, and LGBTQ. Women and girls make up 64% of the
total population who participate in our programs. Most of the girls we serve live in historically blighted
areas of Dallas/Fort Worth and identify as Black and Latinx.

BATC is helping to bridge the gender gap for women in Computer Science through our free Girls Who Code STEAM Summer Camp. Enrollment is now open for girls ages 13 -18. The STEAM Summer Program begins June 28, 2021 – August 12, 2021. Through a project-based learning curriculum, the students will exhibit their project during the Culminating Showcase on August 14, 2021.
