BLACK NATIVITY

Bishop Arts Theatre Center is excited to announce auditions for our upcoming production of Black Nativity.

We are seeking dynamic youth and adult performers who bring energy, personality, strong storytelling, and a love for music and performance.

Audition Date: Sunday, October 11, 2026
Location: Bishop Arts Theatre Center

Production Dates: December 3–20, 2026

AUDITION TIMES

YOUTH AUDITIONS

1:00–4:00 PM

Children and teens will audition during our afternoon session.

ADULT AUDITIONS

5:00–8:00 PM

Adult performers will audition during our evening session.

Youth and adult performers will use separate sign-up links. When signing up, performers will select the available hour that works best for them.

Please keep your selected audition time available. Performers invited to callbacks will receive additional information following the initial audition.

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

ADULTS

Please prepare:

  • A 1–2 minute monologue
  • 32 bars of a gospel song
  • All songs will be performed a cappella
  • Please bring a headshot and résumé

YOUTH

Please prepare:

  • A poem or monologue
  • 16 bars of a Christmas song
  • All songs will be performed a cappella
  • Please bring a headshot and résumé

COMPENSATION & YOUTH EXPERIENCE

ADULT PERFORMERS

All adult roles are paid and will include a performance stipend.

YOUTH PERFORMERS

Youth performers will participate as part of a non-paid performance and theatrical development opportunity.

Young artists selected for the production will have the opportunity to:

  • Work alongside professional theatre artists
  • Experience a full rehearsal and production process
  • Strengthen their performance and storytelling skills
  • Gain experience performing in a professional theatrical environment
  • Appear onstage at Bishop Arts Theatre Center

We encourage young performers of all experience levels who are excited to learn, grow, and be part of the Black Nativity experience to audition.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

ADULT ROLES

Please note: Some adult roles have already been pre-cast.

SISTER LORETTA

Female | 30s–50s
Vocal Range: Alto–Mezzo Soprano

A longtime church member with a powerful voice, a big personality, and a competitive streak. She proudly arrives with her famous banana pudding.

Seeking an actor with strong comedic instincts and powerful gospel vocals.

DUCK (DUCKWORTH)

Male | Any Age
Vocal Range: Bass–Baritone

An unhoused man known and loved by the church community. Observant, warm, humorous, and possessing a wisdom that others may initially overlook.

PASTOR YOSSEF / JOSEPH

Male | Late 20s–30s
Vocal Range: Baritone–Tenor

The church’s young pastor, stepping into leadership after the death of his father. Warm, grounded, and carrying the weight of his new responsibility.

Also appears as Joseph in the Nativity.

YOUTH ROLES

KAIDEN

Boy | Teen

One of Miss Shirley’s grandchildren. Clever, outspoken, and thoroughly unimpressed by Grandma’s attempts to keep the younger generation in line.

Kaiden also doubles as a figure in the Nativity.

KENZIE

Girl | Ages 10–Teen

One of Miss Shirley’s grandchildren. Bright, quick, and always ready with a correction.

Kenzie also doubles as a figure in the Nativity.

NYASHA

Girl

One of Miss Shirley’s grandchildren. Spirited, curious, and part of the trio keeping Miss Shirley on her toes.

Nyasha also doubles as a figure in the Nativity.
