Casting Call
Lucia — Female, 28
Lucia is Mexican-born and acculturated/Americanized. The published character description calls her a “Fresa” in Mexico—essentially someone associated with a more privileged, polished, upper-middle-class background.
She has learned to navigate/codeswitch between Mexican and American culture and between Spanish and English.
She's a novelist who lands her first television writing job in Los Angeles, entering a writers' room dominated by white men. She's ambitious, intelligent, funny, anxious, outspoken, and at times entitled or unaware of her own class privilege. Her arc gets increasingly complicated as her professional ambition begins conflicting with her relationship with Abel.
Abel — Male, early 30s
Abel is Mexican-American, born and raised in Los Angeles, and very proud of his Mexican heritage. Interestingly, the script describes him as almost the inverse of Lucia: although Lucia was born in Mexico, she's more Americanized, while U.S.-born Abel is described as more “Mexicanized.”
He's the janitor/custodian at the television studio where Lucia works. He's working-class, grounded, observant, guarded and funny, with considerably more depth than Lucia initially assumes. As he trusts her, he reveals increasingly personal parts of his life, and those stories become central to the play.
